WHAT THE AKPE CULTURAL CENTER OFFERS

Teaching

First and foremost, the Akpe Cultural Center offers instruction in the traditional performing arts of Africa -- dance, drumming, singing, and storytelling.

These arts are taught by members of the renowned Akrowa Drum and Dance Ensemble, a Ghanaian national treasure. The center offers instruction at no charge to individual local students after school and on weekends, and to classes bused in from local schools during the week.

In addition, for a fee, the center also teaches students and visitors from around the world.

Character Building

Woven throughout all the activities at the center are the traditional cultural values of respect for elders and each other, cooperation, and personal responsibility. To attend the Akpe Cultural Center, each child must maintain good grades in school, be on time, work hard, show respect for others and the center facilities, and demonstrate good manners.

Nurturing

Many of the families who send their children to the Apke Cultural Center struggle to both educate and feed them. So it's essential for these kids to have a good meal while they're at the center, being active. The center provides hearty, nutritious meals in a loving, supportive atmosphere as part of their Akpe experience.
